How to Beat the End-of-Month Reading Slump: 5 TBR Motivation Tricks Every Bookish Girl Needs

Staying motivated with a towering TBR (To Be Read) list can be a true challenge—especially as the month winds down, and you realize you’ve already devoured the books you were most excited about.

As a book blogger for My Grandma’s Teacups, I’ve crafted a TBR routine that makes the most of opportunities from NetGalley, Book Sirens, Book Sprout, Prime Reading, and Kindle Unlimited. But even with careful curation, sometimes the end of the month brings a reading slump that stops even the most passionate reader in their tracks.

Here’s how to beat that end-of-month reading fatigue and rediscover your love for reading.

The End-of-Month TBR Dilemma

Every month begins with anticipation: I scan through NetGalley, Book Sirens, and Book Sprout for new releases and buzzed-about titles that I know I’ll want to read. If that stack looks light, I head to Prime Reading and Kindle Unlimited, cherry-picking hidden gems or backlist favorites to round out the month. Spontaneous invitations from authors and publishers also keep my reading list fresh.

In practice, I’d simply pick whatever calls to me from the list, usually finding that books “choose me” as my mood shifts across the month. But this October, after reading 21 wonderful books, the magic wore off abruptly on the 27th. I was blindsided by a trio of flops—two duds and a DNF (Did Not Finish)—and suddenly, nothing on my TBR looked enticing. The joy of books was replaced with frustration and hesitation: What if the next pick also let me down? Instead of getting discouraged, I decided to consult Pinterest, Google, and my fellow bloggers for advice. From that quest, I gathered five effective “end of month slump busters” to revive your TBR motivation.

Five End-of-Month Slump Busters

Try a New Selection Method

If your usual way of choosing books (mood reading, scanning your TBR, or adhering to a reading order) isn’t working, shake things up. Some readers swear by reading alphabetically—simply pick the next author or title in order on your list. Others love creating a random draw: write the names of your unread books on slips of paper and pull one from a jar. This removes decision fatigue and can introduce an element of fun or surprise that reignites your excitement.

Revisit Your Reading Goals

Take a few minutes to reflect on why you set up your TBR for the month. Was it to reach a specific challenge or target a new genre? Sometimes, reconnecting with your reading goals (like finishing a series, meeting a Goodreads challenge, or diversifying your genres) can provide the motivation to push past the slump. You may find renewed purpose by reminding yourself of the “why” behind your book choices, not just the “what.”

Allow for Mood Swaps (and Make Peace With DNF)

Give yourself permission to swap out a book that’s not clicking. The end of the month is not the time to stubbornly stick with a book that feels like a chore—embrace the freedom to DNF (Did Not Finish) and choose a different title guilt-free. This isn’t cheating your list—it’s making the process rewarding again. Sometimes your reading rhythm needs variety, and forcing yourself through a book you aren’t enjoying just deepens the slump.

Seek Out Low-Commitment Reads

Look for novellas, short stories, or graphic novels to reset your reading momentum. Shorter reads can deliver a quick sense of accomplishment and help clear your mental palate. Alternately, re-reading a favorite comfort book or picking something light (like a cozy mystery or heartwarming romance) can lift your spirits and inspire you to tackle your more challenging TBR books. The key is to find something enjoyable and breezy for an instant win.

Connect With The Book Community

Lean on your bookish friends, online groups, or even browse Pinterest and Goodreads for end-of-month reading prompts. Many readers experience slumps, so there’s no shortage of “slump-busting” threads, blog posts, and creative ideas floating around the internet. Sometimes, a buddy-read or group challenge can inject a sense of camaraderie and purpose, making the rest of your TBR feel less daunting and more communal.

My End-of-Month Rescue Plan

After taking a night off from reading, I mixed and matched these strategies. First, I acknowledged my slump (no shame here!), then scanned my TBR for a short, light-hearted novella. I also decided to try the “jar method”—writing remaining book titles on slips of paper for a random draw. Not knowing what was next made the selection novel and exciting. Lastly, I checked in with my favorite book communities for next month’s reading inspiration, giving me something new to look forward to.

Extra Tips for Sustainable TBR Motivation

Track your wins: Keep a journal or blog post of finished books, noting your favorites to look back on when motivation dips.Mix formats: If your eyes need a break, switch to audiobooks or ebooks for variety.Reward yourself: After finishing a challenging book, treat yourself to a favorite snack, a special drink, or an hour of guilt-free Pinterest scrolling.Remember, it’s okay to pause: Sometimes the best way to beat a slump is to step back and allow yourself a mini-break. Creativity and motivation often bounce back stronger after a rest.

Looking Ahead—Avoiding the Next Slump

Completion isn’t everything—reading should be about curiosity and joy. If you finish the month with some unread books on your TBR, that’s perfectly fine. Next month’s selection awaits, and maybe you’ll be drawn to the very books that didn’t appeal at first glance. For me, shaking up the routine, accepting slumps as normal, and connecting with the book-loving community are surefire ways to keep my TBR inspiring, even as the calendar turns.

Whether you’re a strict list-keeper or a spontaneous mood reader, remember that the reading journey (not just the destination) is what makes this passion so rewarding. If you ever find yourself (like I did on October 27th) staring at your TBR and feeling stuck, try one or more of these end-of-month slump busters to get the magic back.
