Her journey isn’t simply about choosing sides; it’s about reconciling personal loyalty with her fundamental sense of justice. TBR List Showdown: One Big List vs. Monthly Goals (Pros, Cons & Laughs)

Ah, the TBR layout in a reading journal—a sacred space where literary dreams either come true or quietly gather dust like forgotten bookmarks. As a professional blogger and book reviewer, I’ve seen countless attempts at TBR (To Be Read) lists, and oh, the glory and the chaos! Today, let’s dive tongue in cheek into the eternal debate: one big list vs. fresh monthly TBR goals.

First, the one big list: It’s the Mount Everest of reading ambitions. The pros? It’s comprehensive. You’ve poured your soul into a single sprawling list that screams, “Just look at me! I have so much to read!” It’s satisfying to see the sheer volume of titles that feed your bookish appetite. And yes, there’s a special kind of thrill in crossing off those babies one by one like a literary warrior conquering foes.

But let’s not kid ourselves. One big list can quickly descend into a chaotic novel hoarder’s nightmare. The cons? It’s overwhelming. That list can grow like kudzu—slowly creeping over every page in your journal until it’s impossible to tell where you started and where you might (or might not) finish. The guilt of neglected tomes can weigh heavier than a 1,000-page fantasy epic. Plus, the excitement can wear off when your goal feels less like a fun challenge and more like an impossible quest.

Now, enter the monthly TBR goals—the smart, trendy cousin of the one big list. Pros? It’s fresh, manageable, and quarterly meets your attention span without asking too much. Setting new TBR goals every month is like giving your reading enthusiasm a fresh coat of paint. It feels like a mini literary reboot, sparking excitement and keeping your reading journey feeling dynamic and alive. Plus, it’s easier to track progress and feel accomplished with shorter, bite-sized goals. Cue the monthly victory dance!

However, the monthly method does have its pitfalls. The cons? There’s a risk of losing the grand vision. If you’re constantly resetting, you might forget those long-term treasures buried in the “someday” pile. And sometimes, the pressure to tick off new goals monthly can turn reading from a joyride into a rush, making book choices more about quotas than quality or mood. Also, let’s be honest: Some months are busier, and sudden life chaos can derail the whole plan, leaving you with another “unfinished project” badge.

So which is the noble path for the dedicated book reviewer or blogger? The truth? It’s a literary choose-your-own-adventure. One big list is for the dreamers who crave a vast horizon, while monthly TBR goals are for the pragmatic readers needing fresh motivation and realistic checkpoints.

In the end, your TBR layout is less about rigid rules and more about what keeps you turning pages with a smile—or raising your eyebrow at your own ambitious list. After all, every great reading journey has a little mess, a little magic, and a lot of coffee. Happy reading, and may your bookmarks never get lonely!

Crown of Thorns and Magic – Fast-Paced YA Fantasy with Heart, Twists, and Rich Characters (4.5 Stars)

A Crown of Thorns and Magic Introduction – A YA Fantasy Adventure Worth Reading

I recently had the chance to read Crown of Thorns and Magic, and it pulled me in from the first chapter. This young adult fantasy blends fast-paced storytellingcompelling characters, and engaging world-building in a way that kept me turning the pages.

I received an advance copy from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review — and I’m happy to report this one is a winner. Here’s why this 4.5-star read is worth adding to your TBR.

What Makes Crown of Thorns and Magic Stand Out

1. Fast Pacing Without Losing Depth

One of the things I appreciated most was the quick, immersive pacing. The story never lagged, yet the author still took time to create well-rounded characters with believable motivations and personalities. Even supporting characters were more than just filler — they had their own roles to play.

2. Astar as a Protagonist – Strengths and Challenges

The main character, Astar, is just 16 years old — something that gave the book a refreshing YA energy but also occasionally made certain storylines feel a little improbable for her age. While this didn't ruin my enjoyment, I sometimes had to suspend disbelief about the complexity of her actions and the weight of the challenges she faced.

That being said, her youth also adds a unique vulnerability and room for growth, which could be very rewarding to see develop in future books.

3. Twists, Turns, and World-Building

The plot twists kept me guessing right until the end. Every revelation not only surprised me but also enriched the fantasy world the author had built. These twists raised the stakes repeatedly, ensuring there was never a dull moment.

I loved how seamlessly the action sequences were balanced with emotional beats, making the story as heartfelt as it was exhilarating.

Who Will Love This Book

If you’re a fan of:

  • Young Adult fantasy series

  • Strong, layered characters

  • Magic-driven plots

  • Unexpected twists and turns

  • Fast-paced adventure with emotional depth

…then Crown of Thorns and Magic should definitely be on your reading list!

Final Thoughts & Star Rating

Overall, Crown of Thorns and Magic earns a solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ 4.5 out of 5 stars from me. It’s a gripping YA fantasy that moves quickly without sacrificing character richness, and it’s packed with surprises that keep you invested until the final page.

I’m excited to see how Astar’s journey evolves in the next installment and whether the author will continue to blend high stakes, strong emotions, and magical intrigue so seamlessly.

If this first book is any indication, this series could become a favorite for YA fantasy lovers looking for their next binge-worthy read.

Two Spinsters and A Thief

Two Spinsters and a Murder: Disappointingly Dull

I really wanted to love Two Spinsters and a Murder. The promise of a cozy mystery, plus the potential for quirky small-town characters, seemed right up my alley. But honestly, this one almost landed on my dreaded “Did Not Finish” pile. The pacing moves at a snail’s pace, and there wasn’t much about the leads that made me want to root for them or spend more time in their world.

I kept with it, hoping the story would improve—and I’ll admit, the plot finally starts to pick up around the halfway mark. But after slogging through so many slow chapters, the ending just didn’t deliver a satisfying payoff. For me, the time invested simply wasn’t worth it. If you’re a die-hard fan of languid mysteries with minimal character spark, you might find something to enjoy. Otherwise, I’d give this one a pass.

A True Literary Masterpiece: Fourth Wing

Fourth WingBreaking Barriers and Shifting Truths: Why Fourth Wing Is So Much More Than Just a Fantasy
If you love books that sweep you up in epic romance, fierce battles, and themes that stick with you long after the last page, Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros is a must-read. This gripping fantasy novel doesn’t just bring dragons and adrenaline—it dives deep into what it means to truly grow and transform.

Overcoming Barriers: Becoming More Than You Ever Dreamed
Violet Sorrengail is anything but your typical hero. Forced into the deadly Riders’ Quadrant, she’s seen as fragile and unlikely to last even a day. Yet through every bruise, heartbreak, and defeat, Violet discovers that the limits others put on her are simply illusions. She is surrounded by warriors and dragons who expect her to fail―but she endures, adapts, and ultimately soars. This relentless push to become more than what the world expects is what elevates Fourth Wing beyond mere fantasy. The message? Our own self-doubt and the walls built by the world are meant to be broken.

“Hope is a fickle, dangerous thing. It steals your focus and aims it toward the possibilities instead of keeping it where it belongs--on the probabilities.”
– Xayden Riorson

The Villain’s Truth: Is Good vs. Evil Really That Simple?
One of the most striking details in Fourth Wing is its approach to morality. As the story unfolds, Violet and those around her realize that being labeled a villain often comes down to believing a different truth or fighting for a misunderstood cause. Whether it’s Xaden Riorson, whose loyalty and love cast him as both enemy and ally, or the political machinations that shape the war, rightness becomes a matter of perspective. The book urges readers to ask themselves: Whose story are we believing? What truths have we accepted without question?

Tumultuous Romance: Enemies to Lovers
Speaking of Xaden Riorson, the romance between him and Violet steals every scene. What begins as animosity gradually turns into understanding, respect, and a passion that neither of them expected. Their chemistry is built on vulnerability; each carries deep scars and heavy secrets. The transition from enemies to lovers is anything but smooth, and that’s what makes it electric. When trust forms in the midst of danger, it’s hard-won and fiercely protected.

“There’s nowhere in existence you could go that I wouldn’t find you, Violence.”
– Xaden Riorson

When Your Oldest Friend Becomes Your Betrayer
Perhaps most heartbreaking in Fourth Wing is the betrayal by the one person Violet thought she could always rely on. The pain of losing your oldest friend—someone who knows every version of you—cuts deeper than any blade. This betrayal isn’t just an emotional blow; it forces Violet to reevaluate who she is and whom she can trust. The contrast between the blossoming romance and the devastating loss gives the book balance, reminding us that growth often comes at a price.

Final Thoughts
Fourth Wing isn’t just a story about dragons and deadly trials. It’s a heartfelt journey of breaking free from limitations, questioning the truths we cling to, and discovering love in the most unexpected places. As a reader, you’ll walk away reminded that sometimes, the most powerful transformations come from the people and truths that challenge you the most.

July Release:Rose in Chains Audiobook

Disclosure: Some of the links in this post are Amazon affiliate links. If you purchase through these links, I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

If you’re searching for your next immersive listen, Rose in Chains by Julie Soto deserves a spot on your summer audiobook playlist. I recently finished the audiobook and rated it four stars for its gripping blend of dark fantasy, romance, and political intrigue.

The story follows Briony Rosewood, a princess whose world is shattered when her kingdom falls to the dark forces of Bomard. With her people facing servitude or worse, Briony is stripped of her magic and freedom, then auctioned to the highest bidder—Toven Hearst, a member of the very family responsible for her kingdom’s downfall. What unfolds is a tense, enemies-to-lovers dynamic set against a backdrop of loss, survival, and the slim hope of rebellion.

Julie Soto’s writing shines in audio format, with the narration bringing Briony’s emotional journey and the lush, dangerous world to life. The audiobook’s pacing is brisk, balancing heart-pounding moments with quieter scenes of reflection and resilience. The chemistry between Briony and Toven is palpable, and the story’s twists kept me invested throughout.

While some plot elements tread familiar ground for the genre, Soto’s nuanced characters and the audiobook’s atmospheric delivery elevate the experience. If you love romantic fantasy with high stakes and complex relationships, Rose in Chains is a solid addition to your summer listening lineup. Add it to your playlist and prepare to be swept into a world where hope and courage bloom even in the darkest days.

July Audiobook Recommendation: Lore of the Tides

Disclosure: Some of the links in this post are Amazon affiliate links. If you purchase through these links, I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Lore of the Tides swept me away with its gripping sense of urgency as the characters raced to uncover the lost tombs. The quest pulses with intensity, each chapter raising the stakes and making it impossible to put the book down. What truly sets this story apart are the tangled emotions—love and betrayal twist together, forcing the characters (and the reader) to question where loyalty truly lies. The journey toward trusting one’s own inner power is beautifully woven throughout, adding depth and resonance.

The pacing starts off measured, allowing you to settle into the world, but soon accelerates, building momentum until the final, breathtaking pages. There’s a fair amount of spice—enough to add heat and tension, but never so much that it overshadows the heart of the narrative. "Lore of the Tides" balances adventure, romance, and self-discovery in a way that feels both thrilling and meaningful. Highly recommended for anyone who loves stories where every choice matters and every emotion is earned.

As a passionate bibliophile, I am thrilled to share my thoughts on Dragon Forged, the highly anticipated 10th installment in Donna Grant’s acclaimed Dragon Kings series, released on July 8, 2025. This novel is a must-add to your summer TBR list.

Dragon Forged delivers a captivating blend of magic, suspense, and romance that fans of the series have come to love. The story centers on Hector, a powerful Dragon King, and Emilia, a determined seer whose visions drive her to prevent an impending war. Their journey takes readers to Highvale, a secret sanctuary for those with magic, where danger and betrayal lurk. Emilia’s fierce determination to save Hector and confront new and old enemies brings depth and emotional intensity to the narrative.

Donna Grant masterfully balances rich world-building with fast-paced action and complex characters. Even if you are new to the series, the author provides enough backstory and context to dive in without feeling lost. The chemistry between Hector and Emilia is electric, and the twists kept me guessing until the very end.

What stands out most is how Dragon Forged expands the Dragon Kings universe by introducing new locations and characters while maintaining the series’ signature blend of passion and peril. The novel’s dramatic tension and heartfelt moments earned it a well-deserved 5-star rating from me.

For readers seeking a thrilling fantasy romance with dragons, magic, and high stakes, Dragon Forged is an unmissable addition to your summer reading lineup. Don’t miss out on this fiery and unforgettable tale from Donna Grant’s Dragon Kings series.

Instructions
1. Gather Supplies:

   - Pens, markers, stickers, and washi tape.
   - Ruler for straight lines.

2. Design the Layout:
   - Divide the page into 25 sections (5x5 grid works well).
   - Title the spread "25 in 2025" at the top.
