Little Comforts of Autumn: Make a Cottagecore Gratitude Card Garland

Five small Cottagecore Comforts autumn cards clipped to jute twine along a wooden shelf, finished with gingham bows; one card shows its ivory lined back.
A little autumn garland for a shelf edge, with room for memories on the backs. Styling illustration; follow your printed cards for the finished size.

A cup of tea, a basket of apples, bread on the kitchen table. Sometimes the smallest pictures hold the things we love most about autumn.

This little Cottagecore Comforts gratitude garland brings five of those moments to a shelf edge. We’re clipping our fall journalling cards to jute twine, adding two gingham bows, and giving each card an ivory lined back for a memory worth keeping.

A little autumn decoration with something to say

The cards stay at the size they print in the collection: three portrait cards and two wider landscape cards. There is no need to enlarge them. The finished garland is a small decoration for a shelf, craft-room nook or reading corner. Measure your own printed cards and display space before cutting the twine.

Gather your supplies

  • The five illustrated journalling cards from the Cottagecore Comforts Fall Expansion.
  • The coordinating free ivory lined card backs: three portrait and two landscape.
  • White or ivory cardstock suitable for your printer, plus ordinary paper for the backs.
  • Thin jute twine and 5–7 miniature wooden clothespins. Use two clips on a landscape card if it tilts.
  • Red-and-cream gingham ribbon for two small bows.
  • Scissors or a paper trimmer, a ruler, pencil and glue stick or double-sided adhesive.
  • A pen for your gratitude notes and two suitable attachment points for the twine.

Look for the fall expansion in My Grandma’s Teacups on Etsy. The free download below contains the lined backs; the illustrated card fronts come from the collection.

Step 1: Print the fronts and backs at matching sizes

Print the illustrated card sheet in landscape orientation, keeping its original proportions. Print the free back sheet using the same image width and height. Both sheets use the same five-card arrangement.

Use the collection’s print settings where supplied. If printing the image files directly, set the same landscape image size for both rather than letting each file fill the paper independently. Print a plain-paper test first. Measure a portrait card and a landscape card on both sheets to check that their outer outlines match before using your good cardstock.

We’ll glue the backs on individually. This avoids the alignment difficulties of automatic double-sided printing.

Step 2: Cut out the five illustrated cards

Let the ink dry, then cut around each card’s outer border. Keep the three tall cards upright and the two wide cards horizontal. Follow the rounded corners carefully with scissors; leave the printed border intact.

Step 3: Add the ivory lined backs

Cut out the five patterned back panels. The ivory writing tag is already centred on the coordinating design paper, so keep the entire patterned card back together.

Pair each portrait front with a portrait back and each landscape front with a landscape back. Dry-fit them first, with the writing lines upright when you turn the card over from side to side. Apply a thin, even layer of glue stick or double-sided adhesive to the reverse, align the outer edges and press gently from the centre outward. Let the cards dry flat beneath a clean sheet of paper and a book. Trim any tiny overhang after drying.

Step 4: Arrange the cards before cutting the twine

Lay the finished cards on your table in the order you like. You might begin with tea and books, follow with the harvest basket and breadmaking, and finish with preserves and the sleeping cat. Leave a little breathing room between them.

Lay twine across their top edges, allowing extra at both ends for fastening and a gentle dip between attachment points. Cut only after checking the arrangement against your shelf. A smaller shelf can hold three cards, with the others swapped in later.

Step 5: Clip, hang and add the bows

Secure the twine to suitable existing hooks or attachments rated for the surface and weight. Clip each card to the twine without covering its picture or wording. Use a second miniature peg on either landscape card if it needs help hanging level.

Tie a small gingham bow at each end. Keep the bows light and simple so the little pictures remain the focus. Hang the garland clear of steam, splashes and heat, and leave the shelf’s working surface free.

Step 6: Turn it into a gratitude garland

Unclip a card, write a date and a small memory on its ivory back, then return it to the twine. One sentence is enough. Use the pictures as prompts:

  • Tea and books: What gave you a quiet moment today?
  • The harvest basket: What small abundance are you grateful for?
  • Breadmaking: Which kitchen memory would you like to keep?
  • Preserves: What good moment would you save for later?
  • The sleeping cat: What makes your home feel cosy?

Display all five illustrated fronts, or turn one card around to enjoy a handwritten thought. When autumn is over, gather the cards into an envelope and save them with the year written on the front.
