Walk in Her Shoes: The Ultimate Reading Journal Challenge to Explore Unforgettable Female Characters & Their Professions

What is the Walk in Her Shoes Reading Challenge?

The Walk in Her Shoes challenge is all about exploring the amazing variety of female characters and their professions across your bookshelf. Instead of following the usual reading prompts, you’ll build a journal spread dedicated to around 15 unique professions that book heroines might have—from teachers to astronauts, chefs to nuns, detectives to artists. This challenge not only broadens your reading horizons but also adds a delightful, personalized touch to your journal.

How to Create the Walk in Her Shoes Layout

  1. Choose Your Professions:
Pick 15 jobs or roles you’d love to see strong female characters undertake. The more unusual or unexpected the profession, the more fun the challenge! (Nuns, jewel thieves, botanists, and magicians all bring big variety.)

  2. Design or Decorate Your Layout:
Use any medium you like—hand-drawing, stickers, digital printables, or papercrafting tools. I used an AI program called Ideogram to create custom images of myself in each profession, but magazine cutouts or your favourite planner stickers work just as well.

  3. Organize Your Spread:
Arrange the professions in neat rows on your journal page. Under each image or label, leave a line to jot down the character’s name and a space for the book’s title. If you are recreating this layout, I suggest making the images about the size of a book cover for a cohesive look.

  4. Track Your Reads:
As you read a book with a female character in one of your chosen roles, write her name and the book’s title below the matching profession.

  5. Challenge Tip:
Don’t be afraid to dream up some “out-there” professions! Hunting for books with nuns or volcanologists can send you down fascinating reading rabbit holes and expand your genre horizons.

Make It Your Own: Simple or Artistic

If you prefer a minimal approach, simply draw squares or boxes labeled with each profession and paste in the book’s cover or write a quick review as you complete each prompt—let your creativity (and craft stash) guide you!

Why Try the Walk in Her Shoes Challenge?

  • Diversity and Representation: Discover books that feature women in a rainbow of roles, breaking stereotypes and celebrating new voices.

  • Papercrafting Fun: Combine your love of reading with journaling, stickers, and creative layouts—a perfect project for crafters and planner addicts.

  • Personal Growth: Challenge yourself to read outside your comfort zone and walk in the (fabulous) shoes of all kinds of women.
