6 Proven Ways to Increase Foot Traffic at Your Craft Show Booth

Let’s face it: you could have the most amazing craft product ever created, but if customers aren’t stopping at your booth, they’ll never see how fantastic it is. Every craft fair, scrapbooking expo, or handmade market has dozens — sometimes hundreds — of vendors, each vying for attention. Your booth may be a gem, but if shoppers walk past without noticing, all that effort goes unseen.

The truth is, you only have a few seconds to catch a shopper’s eye before they settle on a neighboring booth. So how do you make those precious seconds count? Here’s my step-by-step guide based on years of experience at Scrapfest and other high-traffic crafting events.

1. Incite Curiosity – Stand Out From the Crowd

Shoppers are used to seeing the usual racks, shelves, and counters. If you can break that expectation, you’ll naturally draw attention. Think of something unusual or visually striking that makes people pause and say, “Wow, what’s that?”

In our recent Scrapfest booth, we hung a vintage parasol adorned with flowers and a glass chandelier from our booth frames. These pieces were visible from a distance, didn’t take away floor space from our products, and became instant conversation starters. Shoppers would point and say, “That’s the booth with the parasol!” — essentially giving us a built-in landmark for directions. By using unique decorations that reflect your brand style, you immediately capture attention.

Pro tip: Think vertical elements or suspended displays. Hanging items like parasols, paper lanterns, or even whimsical banners can create visual interest without cluttering your display space.

2. Make Them Laugh – Use Humor to Draw Visitors

Everyone loves to smile — and humor is an instant connection tool. For our booth, I invested in a foam board poster that read:

"A good friend shops for scrapbooking supplies with you, a best friend helps you hide the stash when you get home."

We hung it on our canopy frame facing the main aisle. Hundreds of crafters stopped to read it, giving us a natural opening to chat and invite them into the booth. Plus, we encouraged visitors to take photos with their BFFs in front of the sign. Those pictures were shared widely on social media, featuring our website at the bottom of the poster. Not only did this bring in new customers, but it also generated free advertising from social shares.

3. Offer More Than They Expect – Surprising Extras Build Loyalty

Walk a craft show long enough, and you’ll notice that it can be exhausting. Hours on your feet, crowded aisles, and sensory overload can tire even the most enthusiastic shoppers. Offering a small, unexpected gesture can make a huge difference.

In our booth, we offered free water bottles to visitors as they browsed. No purchase necessary — just a friendly refreshment. Shoppers were pleasantly surprised and instantly remembered us as a courteous, thoughtful vendor. Small acts like this are memorable, and they help your booth stand out from the competition.

4. Be True to Your Brand – Communicate Your Identity Visually

When a shopper steps into your booth, they should instantly know what your brand is all about. From signage to display style, every detail communicates a message. For us, achieving a shabby chic aesthetic with carefully curated displays sent a clear message: we’re a boutique business specializing in high-end scrapbooking supplies from around the world.

5. Give Them a Reason to Stay in Touch – Build a Lasting Connection

Collecting business cards is great, but don’t stop there. Make sure each card has a clear reason for the customer to keep it. Provide an incentive to keep your information — a future discount, exclusive content, or early access to new products — to encourage long-term engagement.

6. Be a Problem Solver – Go the Extra Mile

Craft shoppers often have a specific item in mind. If your booth doesn’t carry it, don’t just point vaguely to another vendor. Being helpful leaves a lasting impression. Shoppers remember vendors who genuinely assist them, and it often results in repeat business or referrals.

Final Thoughts

Attracting shoppers to your booth is both an art and a science. From curiosity-driven décor to humor, extra perks, and excellent customer service, every small action counts. Implement even one of these tips and you'll see a shift in your booth's energy.
