This tutorial is perfect for beginners looking to venture beyond vinyl and cardstock! Let's get started.
Here are the supplies I used to create this piece. I've linked the exact materials for you below!
Step 1: Design Your Quote in Design Space. Measure your acrylic blank carefully. Open Cricut Design Space and create a shape that matches your blank (e.g., a 5-inch circle). Type your favorite book quote and select a font that will look crisp when engraved. I love a timeless serif font for this!
In Design Space, make sure your text is centered perfectly within your acrylic shape. Select both, click "Align," and choose "Center." Now, select just your text and change the "Operation" from "Basic Cut" to "Engrave." If you are engraving on a custom-shaped blank (not just a standard circle/rectangle), you may need to MIRROR your design if you plan to have the quote read 'correctly' through the plastic, but for standard shapes, centering is key.
Step 2: Prepare Your Maker. It's time to switch tools. In your Maker machine, **change the tool in Clamp B to the Engraving Tool**. Make sure you are using the QuickSwap Housing—the piece with the gear on the top—and that the engraving tip is firmly in place. Move your star wheels all the way to the right side of the roller bar so they don't mark your acrylic.
Step 3: Prepare the Acrylic Blank. This is where precision matters. Acrylic blanks come with a protective plastic film on BOTH sides to prevent scratches. **PEEL the plastic film OFF ONLY THE SIDE FACING UP (the side you are engraving on).** Keep the film on the bottom side for now; it protects the back while the machine cuts.
Step 4: Tape the Acrylic to the Mat. Position your acrylic blank on your purple StrongGrip mat. This is the moment to be meticulous: **Measure to be sure the acrylic is exactly centered on your mat and within the bounds of where the machine will engrave.** The StrongGrip mat is a great start, but we need extra security. Take strips of painter's tape and securely tape down the edges of the acrylic. Ensure the tape only covers the very outer perimeter—it should not overlap where the design will be engraved.
Step 6: The Post-Engrave Cleanup. Once the machine has finished (the timing depends on the length of your quote), *do not unload your mat yet.* Use a super soft paintbrush or a large, clean makeup brush to gently and completely **brush the excess acrylic debris off** the surface of the blank. Getting all the "dust" off is vital before you touch the surface, so it doesn't scratch your clean engraving.
Step 7: The Big Reveal. Unload the mat. Peel off the painter's tape and the remaining protective film on the back of the acrylic. Insert the blank into your LED base, plug it in, and watch your favorite words glow. It’s the perfect, literary-themed wellness accessory!
