In celebration of Halloween, enjoy this spooky tale with a bookish theme.
The Final PageShe settled into her favorite armchair just as dusk crept over the horizon, the waning light casting long shadows through the living room windows. The house was quiet—too quiet, she thought—but Halloween night always brought a certain hush, like the world was pausing in anticipation.
Wrapped snugly in a soft blanket, she opened the well-worn copy of a Stephen King novel, eager to lose herself in the familiar dread of his words. The first few pages brought a comforting chill, the kind she welcomed. Outside, the autumn wind whispered through the trees, rustling dry leaves against the porch. A distant howl punctuated the silence, playful and fitting for the holiday.
She smiled, turning a page, the house creaking gently around her as if settling into the night. Then, from somewhere in the kitchen, a faint clatter. She paused, heart ticking a little faster, and listened. Nothing. Just the settling of an old house, she convinced herself and returned her gaze to the book. Minutes later, a scraping noise emerged, like nails dragged lightly across wood. It seemed to circle the room, moving just beyond the edge of sight.
Her cat, usually indifferent to such things, hissed quietly and arched its back, fur bristling. She rubbed the cat's ears reassuringly, though unease crept beneath her skin. A flicker, then the lamp beside her shuddered, wavering like a flame fighting a sudden draft. She glanced toward the window; her reflection stared back, distorted and unfamiliar. The lights continued to flicker, each pulse a heartbeat growing faster in her chest.
A soft whisper brushed past her ear. Words impossible to discern, but the tone was urgent, pleading. She spun around—silent room, empty chairs, shadows pooling in corners. The temperature dropped sharply; her breath came out in frosty puffs.
The novel’s pages fluttered, as if engulfed by an unseen storm. The clock chimed nine, the loudest sound in the house, but echoes of distant screams—thin, desperate—rose from somewhere deep within the walls. She wanted to close the book, to throw open all the lights, but an inexplicable force rooted her in place.
Suddenly, a stinging sensation on her forehead—warm, sticky—ran down the side of her face. She looked up, eyes wide with terror. Crimson droplets hung from the ceiling, slow and deliberate, pooling into a congealing mess on the rug beneath her chair. Heart pounding wildly now, she scrambled to her feet as the room warped. Shadows twisted, black tendrils reaching past the corners of her vision. Screams became cries of horror and agony, echoing from the basement, the attic, everywhere and nowhere at once. The chair tipped backward; she fell onto the cold floor. The ceiling seemed to breathe, pulsating with malevolent life. The house was alive, dripping with her deepest fears. Then, the world shattered.
Her eyes burst open.Breath heaving, heart racing, she was back in her nook. The familiar, warm glow of the lamp softened the darkness. Outside, laughter rang out—children calling “Trick or treat!” at her door.Relief washed over her as she rose and crossed to open the door, the chill of the nightmare still sticky on her skin. Smiling, she knelt down to greet the little ghosts and goblins, handing out candy.
But as she turned away, a small hand brushed hers—a coldness that felt impossibly real. She glanced down to find a single drop of blood marring her palm. Her smile faltered. Was it just a nightmare? Or had the final page turned itself, and now she was part of the story?
