Two Spinsters and a Murder: Disappointingly Dull
I really wanted to love Two Spinsters and a Murder. The promise of a cozy mystery, plus the potential for quirky small-town characters, seemed right up my alley. But honestly, this one almost landed on my dreaded “Did Not Finish” pile. The pacing moves at a snail’s pace, and there wasn’t much about the leads that made me want to root for them or spend more time in their world.
I kept with it, hoping the story would improve—and I’ll admit, the plot finally starts to pick up around the halfway mark. But after slogging through so many slow chapters, the ending just didn’t deliver a satisfying payoff. For me, the time invested simply wasn’t worth it. If you’re a die-hard fan of languid mysteries with minimal character spark, you might find something to enjoy. Otherwise, I’d give this one a pass.
As the vibrant colors of marigolds brighten the fall season and the sweet scent of sugar skulls fills the air, Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) invites us to honor and remember our loved ones in beautiful and meaningful ways. For those of us who love books and storytelling, this rich tradition offers the perfect opportunity to blend culture and creativity with reading.
If you want to celebrate Day of the Dead with a literary twist, here are 10 bookish activities that will enrich your celebration and inspire your heart and mind.
Immerse yourself in novels, poetry, and folklore that explore the themes and legends of Día de los Muertos and Mexican culture. This deepens appreciation and understanding of the holiday’s significance.
Set up a cozy reading nook adorned with your favorite books alongside candles, colorful marigolds, and photos of beloved authors or literary characters who have inspired you.
3. Organize a Day of the Dead Book Discussion
Host a book club gathering—virtual or in person—to discuss books centered on remembrance, death, and celebration. Sharing perspectives makes the experience even more meaningful.
Inspired by Day of the Dead customs, write personal stories or tribute pieces honoring loved ones, real or fictional. This is a heartfelt way to connect memories with the art of storytelling.
Craft your own bookmarks decorated like traditional sugar skulls—using paper, paints, or embroidery. These make wonderful gifts or keepsakes to mark your favorite reads. I get my bookmark designs from Creative Fabrica. Click the image to go there. I think they offer 10 free downloads at the time I am writing this.
Gather friends or family to read poetry by Mexican and Latin American poets or works exploring themes of loss, love, and memory. Poetry’s rhythm deepens the emotional connection to the holiday.
Dive into collections of ghost stories, legends, and myths linked to Day of the Dead. These tales offer both chills and cultural insight perfect for the season.
Try your hand at calavera poems—humorous, rhyming epitaphs traditionally written for Day of the Dead. Write lighthearted verses about favorite fictional characters or authors. Learn to write calavara poetry
Use colorful markers, digital art programs, or craft supplies to decorate your journals or book covers inspired by the vivid Day of the Dead imagery. A quick search on Pintrest will give you a ton of inspiration.
Celebrate community and culture by posting your favorite Day of the Dead-themed books online. Invite others into the celebration through bookish inspiration.
Whether creating, reading, or sharing, these bookish activities offer a unique way to honour Day of the Dead traditions through the magic of stories. Celebrate with heart, creativity, and connection this festive season.

Sparking Joy with Book Brackets: Your New Favourite Reading Journal Layout
Hello, book lovers and journaling pals! If you haven’t yet discovered the magic of book brackets, get ready to fall in love. Think of them as the reading version of those fun tournament brackets — but instead of sports teams, you’re rooting for your favourite books (or books you want to read!). It’s a playful, creative way to challenge yourself and keep your reading goals exciting.
Simply put, it’s a chart with paired-off books competing for your attention. You pick a category (like “Fantasy Showdown” or “Cozy Mysteries Face-Off”), list your contenders, and then track winners as you read and review. By the end, you’ll have narrowed down the ultimate champion of your reading list!
Choose Your Theme
Pick something fun and motivating — genres, authors, themes, or even mood-based categories. Maybe it’s “Books Set in Magical Libraries” or “Books I’ve Been Meaning to Read Forever.”
Size Matters
Print tiny book covers (think 2” x 3” or 3.25” x 4.75”) to fit lots of them on one page. These wee treasures will fit perfectly into your brackets without overwhelming your page.
Draw Your Bracket
Use your favorite pens or markers to sketch out the bracket lines. You can go simple or get fancy with colors and doodles.
Championship Time!
As you read each book, mark your winner. Add notes, ratings, or little stickers to celebrate your progress.
Get Creative!
Add quotes, favorite scenes, or fun facts about each book for those extra-special touches that make your journal uniquely yours.
They turn reading into a game — instant motivation booster!
Your journal becomes a beautiful, interactive reading map.
They’re perfect for all kinds of readers: fast readers, slow readers, or anyone who loves a good challenge.
